About

Andréa Minden, B.Mus. University of British Columbia

I started playing the flute when I was 9 years old. I thought it was the coolest looking instrument and was attracted to its sound but I had no idea of the incredible journey it would take me on.
In 1986, an unusual opportunity arose that I happily accepted. My father was invited to perform at EXPO 86 and invited me and my sister Dewi along with french horn player Carla Hallett to join him and create an experimental musical ensemble for the summer. A year later I became a founding member of The Robert Minden Ensemble which transformed into one of Canada’s top performance companies for young people. We performed at least 100 shows a year, touring to all the major children’s festivals, with highlight performances at Lincoln Centre, NYC, the Kennedy Canter, Washington DC, Edinburgh Children’s Festival, Scotland, and the National Arts Centre, Ottawa. We even performed on Sesame Street. We toured internationally for the next ten years and in between tours the Ensemble composed and recorded three unusual albums. In Vancouver I appeared regularly as flutist (and musical saw player) in a variety of musical theatre orchestras and ensembles.
I have been very fortunate to study with some amazing and inspiring flutists such as Jeanne Baxtresser, Bonita Boyd, Emmanuel Pahud, James Galway, Lorna McGhee, Julius Baker and Steve Kujala.
With a Bachelor of Music Degree from UBC School of Music and certified in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), I have extensive experience in guiding a positive and nurturing learning environment as a teacher and coach.

Newly certified as a “Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) tutor” through the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia.

Now music can also be the foundation assisting the process of learning English as a second or additional language.
